(Images) that might spring to the mind of the world’s most knowledgeable inhabitants might be images of immense natural resources and of Western-style industrialization….capitalist affluence coupled with socialist planning….free enterprise linked with social welfare….a democracy with a monarchy…. peacekeepers to the world….a just society….a nation founded on the principle of free but responsible expression of opinion and action….a multicultural society….a varied people rather too deferential to ideas not their own… a somewhat unsure people….but for all that and– sometimes because of that –a place of promise on a troubled planet.
