The Last Word

This month’s award for a role in the living theatre of the absurd goes to the Royal Welsh Regiment’s commanding officer.

Stationed in Cyprus, the regiment was putting on the usual show of pomp to celebrate the Queen’s birthday last month when an unusual circumstance was precipitated by the regimental mascot, a goat named Billy.

The six-year-old animal which traditionally leads the parade butted a drummer in the rear and upset the ceremony throwing the marching soldiers off their stride.

Billy, who’d had previously carried the rank of lance corporal was officially demoted to fusilier.

Animal rights lovers are said to be organizing a protest.

The old proverb “a cat may look at a King” apparently doesn’t apply to goats who SNAFU Queens’ parades.
